Software

Description

Research software includes operating systems and applications, procedures and accompanying documentation produced by one or more researchers within the context of and/or for the benefit of research.

Explanation

It is not (yet) possible to assess software using authorised lists. Evidence for their value and relevance for research communication must therefore be presented in the narrative.

Some software qualifies as hybrid because its users include not only peers but also a societal group.

Usefulness

This indicator can be operationalised using various criteria to demonstrate – with arguments – the importance of the products. The criteria are:

  • innovative nature
  • complexity
  • reach/applicability
  • role of research unit and/or researchers in creating the software
